DOGS THAT BITE

Picture
I have had dogs come into my shop that bite or threaten to bite.  Normally these are dogs that show their teeth in an attempt to stop the grooming process and be allowed to go home.  With gentle words and gentle but decisive action these dogs are usually easily won over and the grooming can reach a successful end.
Only twice have I had a dog which was so vicious, he had to be sent home, un-groomed.
Dogs who have learned that they can control their surroundings by biting, won't allow contact with people unless it is fun.  Scary clippers, scissors, nail clippers, baths, noisy dryers and having to stand for awhile are usually not their idea of fun.
Often it is fear creating the problem and so all attempts are made to make the grooming process as smooth and pleasant as possible.
Dogs who are allowed to bite at home are not good candidates for grooming.  A dog expert should be found to train the biting dog and the owner.
A dog who is brushed and bathed at home, who is exercised, who is trained to be respectful toward people and other dogs is a pleasure to groom in the shop because they have become accustomed to being handled and don't have excess negative energy.
Cesar Milan has many books, magazines and videos on the subject.  He was a groomer himself and has built an empire on his amazing ability to train dogs out of anti-social behavior.  Read, watch and educate.    Putting energy and training into your dog will turn him into a wonderful and much happier friend.
