DOGS WITH FLEAS

Picture
All dogs should be on a veterinarian approved flea medication, if possible.  Over the counter, cheap flea applications do not work.  They will be more likely to irritate your dog's skin since they need to be re-applied over and over in order to be even moderately successful. (with the exception of Ruffin's Pet Supply in West Brant at Sobey's plaza--they carry Advantage drops for around $60-$80)
If your dog has just developed a flea problem and you are either unwilling or unable to purchase the vet approved drops or pills, please let me know your dog has fleas when you book the appointment.  When you arrive, please carry your dog in and hand him/her to me directly.  Do not put your dog onto the floor.
Your dog will be bathed, perhaps twice with a top quality flea bath.  Once you have taken the dog home, the shop will be sprayed for fleas as a precaution. This will be an extra fee for you. ($5.00) on top of the fee charged for bathing and grooming.
If your dog has fleas your house will have fleas.
Flea infested dogs or dogs who have had an ongoing condition of infestation will need to be dealt with by you at home.  Your best course of action would be to take the dog to the vet.  Your dog's skin is possibly damaged from scratching.  It could be inflamed and infected.  Fleas suck the blood and can deplete a dog to the point of anaemia and death.  It would be kinder to your dog to get a vet's advice and treatment.
If you do not wish to go this route, you will still need to treat your dog for the flea infestation.  He will need a flea bath (flea shampoo can be purchased in a pet value or other pet needs store).  Since the house will also be flea infested you can purchase some excellent over the counter flea sprays but you must spray the entire house, clean all bedding (hot water), his and yours.  All furniture needs to be sprayed, carpeting etc.  You will need to bathe the dog again.  Then you likely need to spray again and re-bathe.  It will take considerable money, time and work.
The best and most money saving, time saving procedure is to go to the vet and get the vet approved flea medication and use this religiously from June through October.
Don't let the fleas take hold and there won't be a problem.
